MASON, TEXAS

Mason Texas is known as the “Gem of the Hill Country” which refers to the fact that Mason County is the only place in Texas where Topaz if found. Topaz is the state gem of Texas. The slogan also refers to the town of Mason as a gem. After walking around Mason for almost 5 miles and 10,000 steps (according to my fitness wristband and I drove to most locations), Mason is definitely a gem. Even with the cold weather and occasional rain of our visit, the town was a very pleasant and an interesting place to visit. Your first stop should be the Mason Square Museum and the Mason County Chamber of Commerce, both on the historic courthouse square. Here you can begin with information on Mason’s history and current interesting sites to visit. They are very helpful and have more information than you can use in only a 1 day visit. Your next stop should be the beautiful Mason County Courthouse in the square. You will find many more interesting sites inside our magazine. Want to see or buy Topaz? We visited two places but there are more. The Mason Square Museum has on display the largest topaz found in North America. Mason Country Collectibles has the “Grand Azure”, a 587 caret Texas Topaz found in Mason County. Country Collectibles also has rings and other jewelry with the famous Texas Cut Topaz. We purchased a 1 carat Texas Cut Topaz ring and plan to return for an “upgrade” in the future. Photo below is with Warren Grote at Mason County Collectibles. There are also places where you can search for your own topaz! Read our topaz article for places offering searching and how to contact them.
