There’s always something happening in Llano. The Llano River offers fishing, boating, swimming and other waterside activities. The spring-fed Llano River with its clear waters provides many activities for those who love the outdoors and water. The river flows east through Llano to Lake LBJ with many areas to enjoy. See bald eagles and herons along the way. The monthly festivals in Llano have something for everyone. The National Rock Stacking Competition and the Crawfish Festival had been recently held prior to our visit to Llano, but the excitement of both events was still being talked about. The National Rock Stacking Championship includes competition for building the tallest rock stack, best rock balancer, best rock arch builder, and most artistic rock stack design. While the competition is serious, the event is designed to be fun for the whole family. There were large crowds for the Llano Crawfish Open held on the Llano River at Robinson Park. No crawfish in Llano? No problem. They brought in 17,000 pound of crawfish for the two-day event. Don’t like crawfish? No problem. They have barbecue brisket, sausage, ribs and other foods. There is also a motorcycle run, a 5K walk/run, a golf tournament and live music. This year marked the 26th year of the event. It began as a fundraiser to purchase a wheelchair for a man with multiple sclerosis and now is a fundraiser for many local charities. Llano is nationally known as the “Deer Capital of Texas” with an abundance of white-tailed deer in the fall and winter seasons. Hunters increase the population of Llano County by 6,000 to 8,000 for deer season. There were no festivals or special events when we visited Llano, but we still had a great time. During the middle of the week, we were able to visit and enjoy all the sites without the big crowds. Stop by the Chamber and the Visitor’s Center. They are friendly and have lots of brochures and information for your visit.
